The Daredevil that was prowling the streets had then become a dangerous wild card hellbent on revenge. This bleak line emphasizes how low he'd mentally fallen, and that his aforementioned moral pillar - his faith - has crumbled. One that is no longer the same symbol he worked to position as a beacon of hope. This serves as a breaking point for Matt, becoming a warped and dark evolution of Daredevil. Wilson Fisk/Kingpin's deep, corruptive roots and criminal intelligence let him snake his way out of prison and sought to reclaim his status. Pulled from Daredevil 599, this quote perfectly encapsulates the logic behind Daredevils sacred no-kill rule. RELATED: The Kingpin's Best Quotes In The Netflix Daredevil Series Matt struggles to grapple with the thought that he might not be physically or mentally capable of being Daredevil and discovers that after being "raised from the dead," his worst nemesis was loose again. He lost loved ones - Elektra and Stick - and was in the midst of a crisis of faith and identity. By the beginning of season three, Matt Murdock had been put through the physical and psychological wringer.

Emile jean jacques rousseau6/22/2023 Rousseau advocates for parental instruction in basic ideas of the world. Young children should learn by interacting with the world physically, rather than from books. Adamantly preferring breastfeeding to other options, Rousseau credits this practice as the first step in the successful maturation of a child within society. He begins this exercise by commenting upon the parenting of young children. Regardless of the public influence, Rousseau is interested in teaching his hypothetical child, Emile, to be honorable and intelligent. He dedicates this book to the exercise of raising a child to be immune to said corruption. Rousseau begins by outlining humanity's natural propensity for the corruption of society. Copenhagen by michael frayn6/21/2023 The play lends itself to overt theatricality over realism (opted for by Howard Davies in his 2002 film) and it is showcased to full effect, from Alex Eales’s elegant, expressionistic set (spare, with a circular revolve and a giant halo overhead) to its three central characters who exist in a no man’s land of time and space, zipping back to the past from beyond their graves.Įarnestness and passion. Howlett’s dynamic direction creates the illusion of action beyond arguments, ideas and theories, and the pace of the conversation is fast and fluid. The play still feels maverick in conception, too, seemingly breaking fundamental rules of drama (all talk, no action) while keeping us gripped. For Heisenberg and Bohr, there is anxiety and guilt in new science being used for destructive political ends, and both men are implicated. There are contemporary resonances in its questions around the morality of science, but it is the play’s exploration of the awkward relationship between science and politics that chimes loudest as Covid has brought scientists on to the same public podium as politicians.

Louise erdrich the sentence review6/21/2023 On top of that, it encompasses challenging times that happened for real, such as the Covid-19 lockdown period and some dark events from Minnesota’s 2019-2020. The coronavirus pandemic is still raging away and God knows well be reading novels about it for years, but Louise Erdrichs The Sentence may be the best. It’s also about family, communities, and heritage. The Sentence is a witty and complex story, sprinkled with super funny moments. Now, that’s another bizarre situation for Tookie … All seems fine, until one of her customers dies and refuses to leave the bookstore. Tookie, the main character, is a tough cookie □ She is one-of-a-kind – with a troubled past, a weird happening in her teenage years (really weird!), she is now settled for a quieter life as a bookseller. Let me tell you all about it (no spoilers)! The Sentence in a nutshell Oh, and it was supposed to be super funny as well! Now, after reading the book, I can say that my initial hypotheses were only a fraction of what The Sentence offers. All I knew about this book before reading it was: ghost story, bookseller as main character, shortlisted for Women’s Prize for Fiction 2022.

A bridge of clay6/21/2023 As his elder brother observes: “Clay was warming up. The primary focus falls on the penultimate brother, Clay – the quietest and most enigmatic of the clan, who spends his time obsessively poring over a monograph on Michelangelo or pounding round the track of the derelict athletics stadium behind the house. Markus Zusak pitches the reader into a ‘terrifically teenaged world’. The distinction is not immediately apparent, as Zusak pitches the reader into the “terrifically teenaged world” of the Dunbar boys five fractious, semi-feral brothers living unsupervised in a suburb of Sydney against a backdrop of cheap food, bad movies and badly behaved pets. At almost 600 pages it shares The Book Thief’s epic weight, but is the first of his novels to be promoted as general fiction, rather than for young adults. Yet the most arresting aspect of the novel was the first-person perspective of the Grim Reaper, who turned out not to be particularly grim at all, but rather sardonic, personable and remarkably funny.ĭeath was always going to be a difficult act to follow and Zusak has laboured for more than a decade on his subsequent work. Markus Zusak’s 2005 The Book Thief, the story of a young German girl whose family give shelter to a Jewish refugee during the second world war, became an international bestseller. I t takes courage, not to mention a macabre twist of the imagination, to conceive a novel for young adults narrated by Death.

The long song andrea levy summary6/21/2023 This risk can be sighted particularly in Levy's representation of transracial adoption and her appropriation of the rhetoric of "illegitimate" kinship. Yet in pursuing this vital and politically urgent task, Levy risks upholding the synchronisation of corporis and cultura-the body and its historical cultivation-essential to colonial modernity's exalting of "blood cultures" that assume the sanguinary transfusion of historical and cultural particulars within the body itself. It explores how Levy presents the colonial legacies that have entangled Britain and Jamaica as distinctly bodily affairs that impact upon kinship and family-making and argues that her representation of these histories is part of her firm attempt to expose the centrality of colonialism and slavery to the constitution of both Britain and Britons. This essay sees Andrea Levy's prolonged preoccupation with matters of family, kinship, and adoption as central to her literary articulation of race, empire, and slavery.

Drawdown climate change book6/20/2023 Communicating sustainability to people effectively.Drawdown illuminates ways we can overcome the fear, confusion, and apathy surrounding climate change, and take action as individuals, neighbourhoods, towns and cities, states, provinces, businesses, investment firms, and non-profits.'Ĭhad effectively communicates the core of Project Drawdown to the audience and my most important takeaways are: Jonathan Foley says ' Drawdown goes beyond solar panels and energy-efficient light bulbs to show that the needed solutions are far more diverse than just those associated with clean energy and that there are many effective means to address global warming. On a higher level Drawdown provides 'the one hundred most substantive ways we can reverse global warming'. So what is Drawdown? In simple words: drawing back of the ('anthropogenic') CO2 emitted into the air, back into the earth. But this post is about something that grabbed my (practically the entire audience's) interest on a whole new level. All in all, it was a fantastic experience. Post lunch sessions had interesting startup pitches from sustainable energy and one-on-one networking sessions with companies of choice. The day consisted of a talk by Chad Frishchman from Project Drawdown, followed by case study sessions with some companies. I was looking forward to meeting interesting researchers and professionals in my field. On the 16th of May, 'All Energy Day 2019' was held in The Hague at Fokker Terminal.

Skinner Box by Carole Johnstone6/20/2023 i liked the psychological aspects and the setup, and even though i predicted a lot of it, it’s like the story says: you all know i’m not a science fiction girl, so the parts of this that were all ‘nanite this’ and ‘beep boop that’ made my brain go fly a kite, as did the kissy parts. something like: if you are reading this story to take a break from the work you are meant to be doing but are writer’s blocked on, be aware that it will be a longer break than you’ve earned and will make you feel even guiltier for having taken the break in the first place, even though you will be fulfilling your vow about reading a tor short per week and at least that part of your constant guilt-tornado will be lessened.Īnyway. first things first: i know it’s de rigueur to make with the content warnings, like the one right before this story- Content warning for fictional depictions of sexual content, including abuse and assault, but i could have done with a warning about how looooong this story was. All life, after all, is just pushing levers and hoping. If the reward is big enough, wanted or needed enough, a rat will endure pain past the point of recovery. |
