Roomies book6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() Man, Christina Lauren is excellent at creating sexual tension! The "will they, won't they" tension throughout the first half of the book is great, and the tension around if there's actually feelings involved when they finally have sex. It's so human to feel like we don't deserve something or that someone else might be better for that position, etc, so it was great to have a protagonist who does a wonderful job coming to find her true worth. She's so creative, but doesn't see this aspect of herself, something that I feel like a lot of people can connect to. Holland sees herself as a secondary character, I loved watching her realize that she's not. I really felt connected to Holland and thought her growth throughout the novel was really well done. ![]() ![]() However, I already add a bunch of their other books on my TBR, so I decided to go ahead and give some of them a read.and I'm so happy I did! Roomies was a completely different experience and I ended up loving it. ![]() My first Christina Lauren book was actually the most recent one, The Unhoneymooners, and while it was cute, it wasn't my favourite romance novel (full review here). ![]()

![]() A hoot to read, ZAP is a dream to perform as high schools in California, New York, and Florida have already discovered. ![]() As characters from one play end up on the set of another, their befuddlement, exasperation, and brave attempts at improvisation are truly priceless. Combining spot-on parodies of Anton Chekhov, Agatha Christie, Tennessee Williams, Samuel Beckett, Neil Simon and performance art and throwing in scenes from RICHARD III for good measure, ZAP flicks rapidly back and forth from play to play, with hilarious results. The idea is so immediate and arresting that readers may wonder why it's never been. ![]() But what play could possibly suit the point-and-click attention spans of kids born with remote controls in their cribs? Cue the lights for ZAP, a nonstop farce that juxtaposes seven different plays performed simultaneously with a comic genius reminiscent of masters from Monty Python to the Marx Brothers. Perhaps the ultimate model for making history relevant: Fleischman (A Fate Totally Worse Than Death, 1995, etc.) retells the major events of the Trojan War, while the accompanying collages show photos and newspaper articles and headlines from this century that in some way are similar to those ancient events. When they're not dusting off the old classics over and over high-school drama departments are constantly in search of new material. ![]() Aimed at a generation of short attention spans and a taste for razor-sharp comedy, the rapid-fire ZAP is a smart, farcical new play for high-school students that's ready to bring the house down. ![]()

Pieter judson the habsburg empire6/23/2023 ![]() ![]() Not so Pieter Judson, whose crisply written and nuanced study focuses on the tangible elements that created and held the monarchy together for a century and a half before tearing it apart in 1918. Historians, too, have often tended to take a rest from reason and look for sentimental explanations as they grapple with the problem of how a monarchy ruling over an inchoate geographical area with a dizzying variety of ethnic groups speaking scores of languages and practising half a dozen religions could have worked at all. His antithesis, the Prussian Jewish financier Arnheim, cherishes his visits to what he calls ‘the fairyland’ of Vienna, in which he can relax and take ‘a rest from reason’. In Robert Musil’s The Man Without Qualities, a book that encapsulates like no other the ineffable muddle of the Habsburg Empire, the eminent statesman Count Leinsdorf struggles to define the essence or even the raison d’être of the empire. ![]()

The last hunter by jeremy robinson6/22/2023 ![]() New series like “The Last of Us,” “White House Plumbers,” and “The Idol” are set for intriguing debut seasons, while veteran favorites in “Succession,” “Barry,” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” all ready for much-anticipated returns. The one-time Home Box Office network thrived long before Westeros was realized, and a year of discovery is just what’s needed for the premium cabler turned premium streamer to maintain its sterling reputation. Barring a stealth production and swift turnaround, HBO will have to endure a full calendar year without its most bankable franchise. None of the other spinoffs have been confirmed beyond development or script-writing. ![]() ![]() “House of the Dragon” Season 2 isn’t expected until the following year (and no solid release timing has been announced).
